The royal wedding is fast approaching and in just a few weeks Prince Harry will tie the knot with his bride, American actress Meghan Markle. And for all food enthusiasts, the biggest question remains – what will the loved up couple serve for all their lucky guests on their wedding day?
Keeping with tradition
The pair are not exactly ones for keeping with tradition, but if they do decide to follow in the footsteps of other royal weddings, there are certain things you could expect from their banquet.
A typical wedding breakfast menu for royals includes a seafood appetiser, a meat mains and a dessert. It is also normal for dishes to be named after the newlyweds, such as Prince Philip’s Filet de Sole Mountbatten at his wedding to Queen Elizabeth II in 1947.
Of course, with Markle’s American roots, guests could expect something decidedly less fancy. The evening could see snacks such as hot dogs, burgers, fries, popcorn and s’mores being served to 200 of their family and friends, which would be a nice nod to their guests from the US.
Lemon and elderflower Cake
The only detail about the food at the upcoming royal wedding that has been confirmed is the cake. Instead of the extravagant eight-tiered fruitcake that Prince William and Kate Middleton had or the 27 cakes that Princess Diana and Prince Charles enjoyed, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will break with tradition and serve a lemon elderflower cake.
Last month, they confirmed American pastry chef Claire Ptak has the honour of baking their much-awaited cake, which the palace stated “will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers”.
